Concord, N.C. (February 9, 2014) - William Byron added the U.S. Legends Winter Heat Pro Points Title to his young racing career when he bested the top U.S. Legends Pro Racers in the eight-race series held at the Charlotte (N.C) Motor Speedway. What makes this title gratifying to the 16-year-old Charlotte, N.C., racer is that six of the eight races were contended on the twisting infield road where Byron had virtually no road course racing experience.
Byron captured two wins, one on the oval and one on the road course, and backed that up with six top-five finishes giving him the overall title by three points. Byron’s oval win came in the opening event where the Charlotte Country Day student went wire-to-wire in the 20-lap race as well as breaking the track record.
“It was very cool breaking the track record and getting the win,” said Byron. “The best Pro racers in the country race here and as usual Dennis Lambert gave me a great car.”
Byron progressed each race on the road course and on January 25 scored his first-career road course win besting a star studded field of Pros.
“It is amazing to win on the road course,” added Byron. “I felt like I was improving and really wanted to win one on the road course. It may just be my most gratifying win so far.”
Byron will return to his No. 25 Pro Legends Car at the Winter Nationals at Auburndale (Fla.) Speedway, Feb. 17 to 21 in sunny Florida. Once back from Florida, Byron will turn his focus to his No. 9 JR Motorsports Late Model owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. where he will make his debut at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway in March.
