Race 12 of 33: Pocono Green 250 at Pocono Raceway
Track Specs: 2.5-mile triangle / 100 laps
Weather: Sunny; 72 degrees
Race Winner: Brad Keselowski
Byron’s Finish: 12th
William Byron and the No. 9 Axalta/Rousseau team brought home a 12th-place finish after battling inside the top 10 throughout the Pocono Green 250 at Pocono Raceway on Saturday afternoon. Byron remains third in the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship standings, now 62 points behind leader and teammate Justin Allgaier.
Byron took the green flag from the fifth position in today's race and reported that his Chevrolet was tight eight laps into the 100-lap event. Byron was quiet on the radio during the majority of the first stage, as it went caution free. With 12 laps to go in Stage One, Byron radioed to the team that his car was tight all around the track. When the stage-ending caution was shown, Byron was scored in the seventh position. The team called the 19-year-old to pit road for four tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment. Byron restarted from the eighth position on lap 32.
Six laps into the second stage, Byron radioed to the team that he was free but could feel the car coming to him. With 10 laps remaining in Stage Two, Byron was still reporting free conditions. Dave Elenz, crew chief, called the Axalta Chevrolet to pit road with three laps remaining in the stage for four tires, fuel and a wedge adjustment. At the conclusion of Stage Two, Byron was scored in the 24th position.
Since the No. 9 team pitted before the end of the stage, the team elected to stay out on track and restart from the fifth position on lap 57. On lap 60, the driver radioed to the team that his machine was a tick tight across the front of the track while running in the sixth position. With 37 laps remaining, Byron came to pit road for right-side tires, fuel and a track-bar adjustment.
The third and final caution of the day was shown on lap 80 and the call from the box was to stay out on track and save fuel. Byron restarted from the fourth position on lap 85 and quickly reported that his Axalta machine was extremely tight. Byron battled through the tight conditions and ultimately crossed the finish line 12th.
Brad Keselowski brought home the win in Pocono and was followed by Allgaier, Kyle Larson, Elliott Sadler and Daniel Suarez rounding out the top five.
William Byron's Thoughts:
"At the end, we had two tires. Right sides just didn't take off like we needed them to. Those changed the characteristics of our car and made it a lot tighter. It's unfortunate, but we had a pretty good day going before that. We will move on to Michigan."
