RECAPPING THE RACE
With weather conditions better than last year’s inaugural event at the Circuit of the Americas, William Byron hit the track Saturday for the condensed practice and qualifying sessions the NASCAR Cup Series is utilizing. Fighting a loose handling No. 24 RaptorTough.com Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Byron went on to qualify 24th for Sunday’s event at the 3.41-mile road course. When the green flag dropped for the start of the race Sunday, the Charlotte, North Carolina, native went to work picking up positions. Wanting to utilize pit strategy to gain track position, crew chief Rudy Fugle called his driver down pit road under green on lap 12 for four tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment. Returning to the track for the final two laps of the stage, Byron crossed the finish line in the 20th position at the end of stage one.

Electing not to pit under the stage break, Byron lined up eighth for the start of stage two. He went on to grab seventh and maintained his position until Fugle called him down pit road under green on lap 28. Needing more help with the rear tires, Byron came down pit road for four tires, fuel and both an air pressure and chassis adjustment. Unfortunately though, Byron was nabbed for speeding during his pit stop. He crossed the finish in 15th at the end of stage two, but with pit road closed for the stage end, Byron was forced to serve his speeding penalty under the stage break. Knowing he would have to start at the tail end of the field, Fugle called the No. 24 RaptorTough.com Chevy back down pit road for four tires and fuel.

Starting at the tail end of the field for the final stage, Byron began picking his way through traffic, one car at a time. Maneuvering his way through the field, the 24-year-old driver reached 19th before the caution came out with 27 laps remaining. Under the caution, Byron came down pit road for four tires and fuel but was told to begin saving fuel immediately. Restarting 18th, Byron made his way up to 15th by the time the yellow was displayed again, this time five laps later. On the restart, Byron continued to pick up positions, racing his way to 12th before another full-course caution on lap 55. Chatter of varying pit strategy began under the yellow before Byron made the decision to come down pit road for four tires and fuel in case of a multiple green-white-checkered attempts. Lining up 27th with 12 laps to go, Byron gained 10 positions over the next run, reaching 17th by the time the yellow flag was displayed again. Remaining on track, Byron survived a string of late-race cautions before ultimately crossing the finish line in the 12th position in the No. 24 RaptorTough.com Chevy at COTA.

QUOTING WILLIAM BYRON

“Tough day. Definitely put us behind with the speeding penalty. We were going to cycle out there in between AJ (Allmendinger) and Reddick (Tyler) and messed it up on my part. I thought our car was decent all day. Definitely some things to work on, but good to come home 12th, get a solid finish and we’ll be good at Richmond and Martinsville. Looking forward to it.”
