SPEED READ

  • William Byron qualified 10th for Sunday’s race at Auto Club Speedway after participating in the new condensed practice and qualifying sessions for the 2022 season.
  • Showing speed all race, Byron ran within the top-five for most of the start of the event, scoring a third-place result in Stage One. Leading laps at one point during Stage Two, Byron suffered from an extended pit stop that put him back in traffic. He was able to maneuver his way to ninth by the end of Stage Two.
  • Continuing to fight his way back to the front, Byron reached the top-five before unfortunately being caught up in an on-track incident on Lap 151 that ended his race early in the 34th position.
RECAPPING THE RACE
Making it to round two of qualifying in the new condensed format for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season, William Byron spun while making his qualifying attempt but was still able to secure the 10th starting position for Sunday’s race at Auto Club Speedway. Byron wasted no time gaining track position in the opening laps, reaching the fifth position before the first caution of the race on Lap 16. Running a little on the snug side, crew chief Rudy Fugle called his driver down pit road under the yellow for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment. Picking up three positions on pit road, Byron chose to line up on the inside of the front row for the ensuing restart but slot into the third position once the field got going. Moving himself into the second position, Byron was within striking distance of the leader when the caution came out on Lap 39. Wanting fresh tires, Byron came down pit road for four tires, fuel and another round of air pressure adjustments. Looking to try something different for the next restart, Byron chose the high lane, lining up in the fourth position with 23 laps to go in the opening stage. Byron raced his way back to second by the time the yellow came out once again, this time on Lap 54, Byron came back down pit road for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment to aid his No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Going back green for an eight-lap shootout to end the stage, Byron continued to maintain the third position until he took the green-checkered flag, scoring major stage points. Still not quite comfortable with the handling of his car, Byron came back down pit road for four tires, fuel and another air pressure adjustment.

Electing to line up in fourth for the start of Stage Two, Byron once again went to work picking up track position before ultimately taking over the lead on Lap 100. Pulling away from the field, Byron continued to lead until the caution came out just 12 laps later. Coming down pit road for four tires and fuel, an issue during the stop on the left front forced Byron to give up his track position and line up 15th for the final 15 laps of the stage. Making quick work of traffic, Byron was able to pilot his way to the ninth position by the end of Stage Two. Reporting that his No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was more loose in traffic that last run, Fugle called him down pit road for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment.

Choosing to restart in the high line from 12th, Byron powered his way through traffic putting himself within the top-five running order once again. However, when the No. 8 car suffered a flat tire but remained on track, Byron went to pass him but unfortunately got loose beneath him, ending his day at Fontana early.

QUOTING WILLIAM BYRON
"I’m so frustrated that I made that mistake for our team today. What a fast car and we were making our way back to the front. I got loose getting under the No. 8 who had a flat tire. I’m thankful we had such a fast Axalta Chevy and I know we’ll be back stronger next week."
