RECAPPING THE RACE
After laying down the third-fastest lap in Wednesday night’s qualifying session, William Byron lined up second in the first of two qualifying races the following night to set the line up for this year’s DAYTONA 500. With two of his teammates starting to his inside, Byron was able to easily maneuver his way to the low lane between the No. 5 and the No. 9. Byron and his Hendrick Motorsports teammates maintained those top three positions through the halfway point of the 60-lap race. With green-flag pit stops looming, Byron was shuffled out of line, dropping him back to ninth before crew chief Rudy Fugle called him down pit road on Lap 34.

Liking the handling of his No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, Byron came down pit road for four tires and fuel with no adjustments. With split pit strategy playing out throughout the field, Byron came off pit road in the 10th position. Continuing to run under green, Byron maintained his position while leading a three-car pack as the laps wound down. On the white-flag lap, Byron slipped to 12th after the two behind him dipped to his inside, dropping him to 12th as he took the checkered flag. His finish in the first Duel event gives him the 23rd starting position for Sunday’s DAYTONA 500.
